Glogster

Glogster was launched in December 2007 and Glogster EDU in October 2009. Since its founding, Glogster has experienced rapid growth and now has users in more than 200 countries and territories. Even though the portal is targeted primarily at young people, many of the users are aged 25 or over. At present, there are over 10.4 million Glogs and over 8 million Gloggers on the website.

At the time of its establishing Glogster was inspired partly by classic paper posters and generally by the worldwide poster pop-culture of teenagers. At that time boring and “orthogonal” internet was another inspiration. The objective was to enable unlimited creative self-expression.

Glogster is a social network that allows users to create free interactive posters, or glogs. Aglog, short for graphical blog, is an interactive multimedia image. It looks like a poster, but readers can interact with the content. Glogster was founded in 2007. Currently this social network has over one million registered users. The majority of the Glogster community are teenagers.

Glogster provides an environment to design interactive posters. The user inserts text, images, photos, audio (MP3), videos, special effects and other elements into their glogs to generate a multimedia online creation. Glogster is based on flash elements. Posters can be shared with other users on the site, embedded in external wikis or blogs, and shared via many social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Glogs can also be exported and saved to computer-compatible formats.

TECHNOLOGY IS NOT OBSELET

“Reflective Journal of TLL”

By: Rida Sahridah
2010120029
Section C

In this third semester, I have to visit a high school. I visited a high school of religion, MAN 11 Jakarta. It is located in Lebak Bulus. I started the visiting on 17 October 2011. I did School Experience Period for two weeks there. The relationship between school experience and Technology and Learning Language is observation of the way the school and language teachers conduct language class in this digital age. So, I did observation about utilization of technology in learning and teaching language. I focused on English class only. However, how do ideal usage of technology in learning and teaching language?

The most important that is technology must help language teachers and learners to achieve main goals of learning and teaching language perfectly. How do the school and language teachers maximize usage of technology in the classroom? This century is a golden age of using technology. Technology also touches education part especially in language learning. Indonesian learners learn English as a foreign language even a second language. Learning second language does not easy, but also does not mean difficult. Technology takes the difficulties of learning language become easier. However, not all of problems answered by using technology. How does technology be part of language learning?

Learning language in one packed, it is included abilities of listening, speaking, writing and reading. CALL is a newest issue on technology in language learning. Thomson Reuters (2010) says Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is an intercontinental and interdisciplinary journal which leads the field in its dedication to all matters associated with the use of computers in language learning (L1 and L2), teaching and testing. It provides a forum to discuss the discoveries in the field and to exchange experience and information about existing techniques. In my opinion it is very helpful for language learning process. So,how about utilization of technology in MAN 11 Jakarta?

I have done assistance of English teachers there. I also did observation toward teachers and students and also classroom. In average, each class consists of 35 students. The uniqueness is about the three English teachers. They divided into three different majority in teaching English. These three are Grammar teacher, Reading teacher and Listening and Speaking teacher. So, it means that one class will teach by three English teachers all at once. In the classroom, there were some available equipment. They are speaker, screen and in focus. For usage of computer in classroom, the teacher brought and provided portable PC or notebook by their selves.

According to above, there are three teachers. The Reading teacher is not bring and use technology into classroom at all. His instruments which are used in learning process are only some pieces of reading material papers. The way he teaches just like this, he asks students one by one to read some sentences and then answers the questions about the passage orally. Then, the English class the end. Next teacher is the Grammar teacher. He uses a slide of power point in the class which is showed a general explanation about the topic. Then he shows some examples sentences by open document from Microsoft office. The last is the Speaking and Listening teacher. She asks her students to write conversation and then perform it in a group. That is for speaking part, for listening part is she plays audio material from her cell phone which use external speaker. Then the students fill missing words in the passage. Based on my observation, screen and in focus are ready to use but unfortunately, the speaker does not give affection to language learning process because it is like parallel speaker which use only for announce information from school to all teachers and students.

I have done my team teaching in three classrooms. I have tried to bring and use technology in my teaching time. I thought how to express sympathy at that time in tenth grader. My objectives are students are able to express sympathy in right moment and students can respond well. I explained the topic by using interactive power point slides. Then, showed a video which is about conversation between a girl and a boy. In that video there are some sympathy expression inside the conversation. I asked the students to identify and write down what expression they got from the video. The length of the video is three minutes and I showed it two times.

When I thought grammar class, I used online drilling. The grammar is past simple tense. Before I conducted it, I explained it to students first. Those students’ answers would check by online. So, after they typed their answers and then clicked submit, it would check automatically. It was interesting because it was kind of interactive website to learning and teaching process.

Actually, we cannot avoid of this digital age. Althought, teaching come first and then technology. I am not see difficulty when I showed to them interactive technology because they are digital generation already and they like it. In my opinion, the reason why there are no meaningful, interactive and strategic investment in learning language process is because the teachers expectation to students is students can receive material well only. So, when students listen carefully to the teachers, it means enough for them.

I realized that being an educator must be already being a teacher, but being a teacher does not mean already being an educator. Now days, technology help us. Technology takes the difficulties of learning language become easier. It does not mean all of problems answered by using technology. However, it is interesting to bring by digital teachers to digital generation in this digital age.

Tolerance is not Ignorance

By: Rida Sahridah

Humanistic Studies 1

I just realized that you, we and I had a multiple identity. I also always judge people from one side only not from several sides. I also have to realize that people definitely have their good things and bad things of each. The same thing happened to me.

How can I tolerate others? Of course I want to live peacefully among others. The most fundamental question is why I am easy to hate when other people do not have thought just like me. Differences that occur in friendships, sometimes I put distance between my friend and I. I simply believe bad thing issues about other ethnics. Of course, the general imaging of other ethnics is from the negative side. For example, I always thought that Javanese was ambitious or have assumption that Bataknese was grumpy. However, it all is the assumption when I was still early. I realized that I should see the other side so that all would seem logical.
I tried to interpret and to probe why the Javanese was ambitious. Apparently it is because they are always consistent with what they want so they are always trying more to get it. Then, why I can assume that the Bataknese were grumpy because of the way they spoke was indeed using a high tone in speaking normal though. Looks like I should immediately apologize to both of them for my mistaken.

It is not there, either was no definite and fix about kindness. I am a multiple identity, I am not only a woman but also Sundanese and Muslims. In terms of my girls of course I would be more inclined to use my feelings rather than the use of logic as well as men. Who said anything like that, environment was making me think like that. My identity as a Sundanese makes me more comfortable being among the Sundanese as well because we are one language. As a Muslim of course I will easily protest when someone is lying because in my view as a Muslim to be lie is a sin.

If tolerance is the ocean how deep and widespread is must be. If tolerance is sugar how much sweet should be an ideal tolerance that can be interpreted and implemented correctly.

I am an educator in the future. By realizing that tolerance is a must of course be easier for me in my teaching days later. I imagine that my future students diverse student so I need an advanced wise as wise as my lecturer face my friends and I.

Technology and Language

By: Rida Sahridah (TLL’S REFLECTION JOURNAL)

I attend TLL or Technology Language Learning twice every week. Last week we discussed about approach and total physical response listening and speaking and also listening and speaking. I thought these topics will help me if I teach someday.

Natural approach is introduced by Stephen Krashen. As advertised, The Natural Approach is very appealing – who wouldn’t want to learn a language the natural way, and what language teacher doesn’t think about what kind of input to provide for students. However, upon closer examination of Krashen’s hypotheses and Terrell’s methods, they fail to provide the goods for a workable system.

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a method developed by Dr. James J. Asher, a professor emeritus of psychology at San José State University, to aid learning second languages. The method relies on the assumption that when learning a second or additional language, language is internalized through a process of codebreaking similar to first language development and that the process allows for a long period of listening and developing comprehension prior to production. Students respond to commands that require physical movement.

Technology also can apply in listening part at English session. Internet access can browse and serve some websites which is provided listening part. The websites are http://learnenglishkids.britishcouncil.org and http://www.englishclub.com/listening/. For the speaking part, the websites are http://schmooze.hunter.cuny.edu/ , http://kalinago.blogspot.com/ and http://international.ouc.bc.ca/pronunciation/.

The successfulness of learning language is willingness. Hopefully next meeting will be more amazing.

Familiar Devices for Interesting Language Learning

Technology and Language Learning Journal

By: Rida Sahridah

Last week I attended TLL meeting. As usual I learned and discussed amazing topics every week. This week TLL discussed about MALL and appropriate design for learning language. I thought that would be interesting topics to be discussed among us as generation of digital teacher candidates.

First is MALL or Mobile Assisted Language learning is one of type language learning but more simple. Mobile is simpler. Mobile means portable. Portable means we can carry it anytime, anyplace and anywhere. I thought it is very great. Language learning is mobile now twenty four hours without think about limitation of place and time.

Mobile assisted language learning equipments or gadgets are cell phones, PDAs/ handheld computers, iPods, MP3 players and digital voice recorders. We are already really familiar for these kinds of gadget. However, these devices can relate to language learning process. How can it be?

Cell phone is most frequent seem to employed text messaging for vocabulary learning, text messaging for conclusion of material, quizzes and surveys and also browsing by internet access. Teacher will provides the usage of cell phone to student or do this among students, peers. The advantages are cell phones can uses anytime and anywhere and quickly process.

Handheld computer or PDA is portable computer, the earlier or newer device is iPad. What personal computer or PC can do also handheld can do the same. For examples are existed of speaker, keyboard monitor, internet access and software available. Usage of handheld computer is more practice, simpler, faster, easier and more interesting.

MP3 players are not only music player now but also include some utility. The earlier devices are MP4 and iPod. What can MP3 player do for language learning process? Digital audio files can also relate to iPod and MP4. Student can download audio files from podcast or other sources and records their voice. Student can downloads news, conversations, storytelling and anything else. They also can records their voice by using MP3 player. They can edits or revises it in computer by using audacity, audio editor then save in their MP3 player or MP4 player or upload into web. The strength of this devise are student can listen audio files anywhere and anytime, student can develope their creativity in creating audio files and audio files uploaded can be accessed easily and also audio files save securely.

The last topic is appropriate design for learning language. The general rules for appropriate design of learning language are simple, understandable, legible, interactive and full of beneficial contents. One kind of interactive web is www.glogster.com. I think it is like blog but more sophisticated, interactive and interesting. We can also select glogster edu for teacher.

I hope I can apply all topics in my classroom later. TLL always be interesting meeting ever. Hopefully, next meeting will be more amazing.

Teaching, Teaching and Teaching

By: Rida Sahridah
PETA e-reflection 3

Last Tuesday was my third meeting of PETA. The meeting discussed about teaching models. That was my favorite part, group discussion. My PETA lecturer, Ms. Ine divided us into seven groups. Then she gave some reading material to us. She broke down us to gather with expert group in the same reading material. These were teaching models.

First is direct instruction models. This is teaching model with teacher as model or center in learning process. The key word are transfer and automaticity. Transfer means students expect to apply their knowledge from one lesson to other lesson. Automaticity means students are ready to answer questions aotomaticaly. This teaching model also helps students to learning by themselves from homework.

Second is lecture- discussion model. This can be also call interactive learning. The reason is because teacher and students ask questions each other. By this teaching model students and teacher are in the ideal learning atmosphere.

Third is guide- discovery teaching model. Teatcher role is as facilitator not only as teacher or educator. Teachers give time to student to discuss and ask. I think this will be good for classroom activities.

Last is group interaction model. Not only techers as center but also students as center of learning process. Teachers really develop students ability..

So, these are my relfection for this week. Hopefully next week will be more fun and “heavy” than this week.
