Hopes for a Better Humanity

By: Rida Sahridah

Humanistic Studies

Humanistic studies are a new subject to me in this third semester. Many imaginations in my mind about what will I learn on this subject. For example, introduce and study different ways of others life or tell in detail how we should behave as a human beings and living creatures. The lecture gave me a question about my expectations for this subject. I was thinking more and deeply about it.
Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is the principle of Indonesian people. That means different but still one. These words appear due to the diversity of Indonesian. Multicultural is a breath of Indonesian. Differences of religion, ethnicity, race and customs are a real part of my life. Life always besides differences and nationalism make it become one.

Based on these differences can I expect that Humanistic Studies will clarify how to live peacefully with differences? I just remember, do not avoid the differences that exist and still keep my own identity.

Another important thing is that the dispute also occurs from similar community in people in a single equation not differential community only. As a future English teacher candidate, how can I relate between English and Humanistic Studies. I was thinking about this question.

I am proud being Indonesian. Let me introduce myself, I am Sundanese girl. Even I proud more because I have many friends with different backgrounds. In fact, I am not only friend of Indonesian but also some people from other countries.
Humanistic Studies remembered me that God created human in order to know each other. Through Humanistic Studies, I want to know the real situation from the real resource person. It will be more logical and reliable.

These differences make life more meaningful. When we have something, we are not only enjoying it by our self, but share it with others. How wonderful a difference is. However, my great hopes on Humanistic Studies are introduction of unique culture in detail and know the opinion of others who differ with me about me.

The last but not least, I want to know why do people classify others people by class stages or caste. I also want to know more is there any advantages of the classification of human groups, such as the upper, middle and lower classes. I am very sad for this classification. So, a true humanity of human being is still questionable. I hope from this subject I can get the answer and apply it in the real world.

Technology and Language Learning's Journal 1

This century is a golden age of using technology. Technology also touches education part especially in language learning. Learning second language does not easy, but also does not difficult. Technology takes the difficulties of learning language become easier. However, not all of problems answered by using technology. How does technology be part of language learning?

Learning language in one packed, it is included abilities of, listening, speaking, writing and reading. The earlier technologies for listening engagement are video chatting, video and CD or DVD not tape recorder or oral only. Then, the earlier technologies for speaking are video recorder and video chatting not oral only, and for writing is practice online and also for reading are voice recorder, and e-book. Technology in language learning relates with teacher and classroom. So, teacher, technology and learning support each other during the class.

Today, technology gives big influences toward student as digital generation. In the classroom stays technology equipment, such as a set of PC, internet working, screen, projector and speaker. Those are needed to support language learning. CALL is a newest issue on technology in language learning.

Thomson Reuters (2010) says Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is an intercontinental and interdisciplinary journal which leads the field in its dedication to all matters associated with the use of computers in language learning (L1 and L2), teaching and testing. It provides a forum to discuss the discoveries in the field and to exchange experience and information about existing techniques. It is very helpful for language learning process.

Here some advantages of using computer assisted language learning. First, prove practices for students’ trough the experimental learning. Second, offer the students more the learning motivation. Third, increase authentic materials for study. The last, encourage greater interaction between teachers and students and peers.

Limitations of technology blow the disadvantages. First, expensive price of hardware and software becomes the big obligations for schools and parents. Second, it is necessary that educators and pupils already get basic technology knowledge before using it and apply in CALL. Third, the software of computer assisted language learning still uncovers the material completely. Fourth, computer technology in unable to deal and identify the real situation of the learners.

Technology and language learning are great combination. The combination makes classroom activities more interesting and engaging. It time for us as a teacher candidates prepare our students for the real world not examination only. Therefore, apply CALL and innovate the limitations to get maximum benefits in learning process.

Session 1 : Introduction (20 September 2011)

Session 1 is my first meeting with Principles of Effective Teaching and Assessment. That is a great meeting. The introduction makes me want to know more and more about the course.

The lecturer divides the class into 7 groups. This is a permanent group for one semester. After that, we talk about module assignment and assessment. That explained well one by one. The explanations are about assessment, description, type, percentage and due date. Then, more interesting part begins.

Two friends who sit next to me and I discuss about our motivation become a teacher, someone who inspires us become a teacher and our opinion about our self. That is a good discussion who leads me to think beyond about this program, educational English and teacher to be. Then, time to group discussion.

Group of four is my group. We discuss about an ideal or an effective teaching and teacher base on our point of view. We write down our ideas on a paper. Not only that, we also do gallery walk to read another groups ideas.

"The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness"
