What can ICT offer the language teachers and learners? This question needs ideal answers. Then debate becomes the process to get ideal answers and logical reasons. The debate’s motion is school board wants to build a new language laboratory. The debate occurs among school board versus language teacher. This is case detail of the motion, school board plans to build a new language lab. In order to help the language teaching and learning, but some language teacher think that language lab. is an unnecessary luxury and instead and want to open internet access in the computer lab. The debate expects to get ideal result.
The school board’s points of view are language lab. covers four basic materials of learning language, internet access needs extra budget for technician and pay internet access constantly and internet access can be given negative effects. The language teacher’s points of view are internet access offers abundant resources for language teaching and learning, internet access give interactive learning and cheaper budget for apply internet access. Aim from the debate is ideal ICT for language teaching and learning.
Today is digital age for digital teachers and digital learners. We can access internet connection for twenty four hours a day, but internet access doesn’t really give language teaching and learning atmosphere. Meanwhile, language lab. covers four basic materials of learning language. Those four are listening, speaking, writing and reading.
Samples of internet access which can engage to learning language in class room are usage of facebook, google, youtube, skype, blog and webquest. Those are kind of web 2.0 which is very interactive. The easy of using technology in this age is just the beginning. So, just wait for further fantastic technology.
Dr. Bruce D. says “different kinds of experiences lead to different brain structures”. It means that this digital age born digital natives and digital media. The characteristics of digital natives are used to receiving information really fast, like to parallel process and multi task, prefer their graphics before their text rather than the opposite, prefer random access (like hyper text), function best when networked, thrive on instant gratification prequest reward and prefer games to “serious” work. The last is characteristics of digital media experience will help us to text, images, audio and video, mixing media and distributing media.
How amazing this century is. We can mix and develop ICT for language learning in classroom. The most important thing is how teachers deal with negative effects toward students. Let us think fast.
